Magic Amplified: Prayer for Pagan Partnership

Perhaps what you need most is a partner to support, encourage, and collaborate with in your magical workings. On a waxing moon Friday night, this spell will bring your partner to you.

Gather together

    * 1 lemon

    * 1 orange

    * 2 rosemary sprigs

    * 1 orange candle

    * a fireproof clay or glass dish

Group the fruit and rosemary around the orange candle. Light the candle and intone:

    On this night

    I do invite

    new energy to bring delight

    Under this lunar light. So mote it be.

Now, using the candle flame, light the tip of the rosemary sprigs and set them in the fireproof dish. Rosemary has a very powerful cleansing smoke. It was used as an incense by ancient priests and priestesses in Greek and Roman times and by prophets and seers. It cleanses the aura and paves the way for major magic. Soon your partner in spellwork will appear.

New Moon Charm for Banishing Heartbreak

Any new moon is the perfect time to create a new opportunity. Clear away relationship “baggage” with this banishing spell. If you have been hurt emotionally, this will clear it, fast.

Gather together

    * a clear glass bowl filled with 2 cups (480ml) of water

    * a silver spoon

    * a salt shaker

    * palo santo incense

    * 2 white candles and 2 black candles

Place the clear glass bowl of water on your altar. Set a silver spoon beside the glass bowl along with a salt shaker. Light the cleansing palo santo incense, the two white candles, and the two black candles. Pour salt on the spoon, sprinkle the salt into the water and stir with the spoon clockwise. Recite aloud:

    Hurt and pain are banished this night;
    Fill this heart and home with light.
    With harm to none and blessings to all.
    So mote it be
.

After a few moments of contemplating the candle flames, recite the spell again. Using the silver spoon as a snuffer, extinguish the candles. Toss the bowl of water out on the street in front of your house, near a drainage grate. All your love troubles should drain away by the end of this lunar cycle.

Spell for Letting Go

Most of us have had problems giving up on a relationship at one time or another.

Gather together

    * a piece of black string, enough to tie around your waist

    * bolline

    * a photo or memento representing your ex

Timing: Ideally this should be done during the waning moon when things can be put to rest, but it works anytime you need it. Listen to your heart and you’ll know exactly when it is required.

Tie the black string around your waist during the waning moon. Tie something symbolic from the old relationship to the end of the string —a photo or the name written on a scroll of paper, for example. Speak this spell aloud:

    Bygones be and lovers part,

    I’m asking you to leave my heart.

    Go in peace, harm to none.

    My new life is now begun.

Go outside and, using your sacred bolline, cut off the string and toss it away along with the memento where it will no longer inhabit your living space. You should feel freer and lighter immediately and will attract many new potential paramours now that you are not weighed down by lost love.

Seal It with a Kiss: Binding Love Potion

When we are in love, we all hope for it to be requited. Spellcraft can help with that! Here’s one to share with your lover.

Gather together

    * 2 teaspoons dried lemon balm, basil, blackberry, or magnolia buds

    * 2 cups (480ml) of water

    * a teapot

    * 2 mugs

    * honey, to sweeten

To ensure a faithful relationship, make a tea from any of these herbs of loyalty in love. Boil the water and add to the teapot along with the herbs. Steep for 3 minutes, then pour the tea into the mugs and sweeten with honey. Intone this spell as you stir each cup.

    Lover be faithful, lover be true.

    This is all I am asking of you.

    Give thy heart to nobody but me.

    This is my will.

    So mote it be.

Before you and your lover share this special treat together, whisper this wish in secret:

    Honey magnolia [or whichever herb you chose], Goddess’s herb,

    Perform for me enchantment superb,

    Let _____ [name of lover] and I be as one.

    As ever, harm to none.

    With this, the spell is done.

This spell must be sealed with a kiss between you and your beloved. Now enjoy drinking the tea with the object of your affection, from whom you wish not to stray, and his or her loyalty will never sway.

Attracting That Attractive Stranger

Don’t tell me you have never had a brief but meaningful encounter at your local cafĂ© or exchanged long glances on the bus crossing town. Shyness tied your tongue, and now your only hope is that chance will bring you together. Try this trusty attraction spell.

Gather together

    * a man-shaped mandrake root or substitute (see spell)

    * 1 cup (20g) of red, white, and pink rose petals

    * 1 red, 1 white, and 1 pink candle

    * 2 goblets of red wine

Place the mandrake root (commonly available at herbalists and metaphysical shops) on your altar. If you cannot find the mandrake root, you could substitute any statue, drawing, photograph, or figure of a man that reflects some quality of your heart’s desire. Surround the root or figure’s base with the rose petals and candles. Place the goblets with a small amount of red wine in them beside the candles. Make sure it is a wine you really like and would want to share with a romantic interest, as you will refill the goblet each evening. Burn the candles for 5 minutes every night for a week, starting on Friday, Venus’s Day.

Sip from one of the goblets, and recite:

    Merry Stranger, friend of my heart,

    Merry may we meet again.

    Hail, fair fellow, friend well met,

    I share this wine and toast you,

    As we merry meet and merry part

    And merry meet again.

Make sure you look your best when you step out as you will soon lock eyes again.

Spell for New Beginnings

This spell can be used to meet someone new or to bring on a new phase in an existing relationship.

Gather together
    * 1 pink candle and 1 blue candle
    * rose or jasmine essential oil
    * 1 or more favorite flowers
    * a bobby pin/hair grip or safety pin

Before dawn, anoint each candle with rose or jasmine essential oil and place them on your altar. Light both candles, lay the flower(s) next to them, and chant:

    Healing starts with new beginnings, please show me who.
    My heart is open, I’m ready now.
    Today, my heart is open to love anew.
    Goddess, you will show me how.
    So mote it be.

Extinguish the candles and leave them on your altar. Pin the flower(s) to your lapel, jacket pocket, or in your hair and await the sweet message from the Goddess.

Making Relationships Sacred: Loved-one Shrine

This sacred space is dedicated to the special people in your life: friends, family, and your partner. Your shrine can be a low table or even a shelf and provides a place to put gifts you have received from your loved ones, which might include crystals, jewelry, art, and lovely objects along with all their photos in frames. Every time I see my own special Loved-one Shrine, I smile. It fills my heart with love.

Gather together

    * sage for smudging

    * a pink cloth or scarf

    * 2 pink candles and 2 white candles

    * a small rose quartz and fluorite crystals

    * a vase of fresh cut flowers of your choice (daisies, for example)

To set up your shrine, purify the space by lighting the sage bundle and letting the smoke waft around the area. This is called “smudging” and is an essential part of witchcraft. You can use wild sage or purchase it in any herb store. Once you have smudged the space, cover your sacred space with the scarf or cloth, and place the candles in each of the four corners. (Pink is the color of affection and white represents purity.) Place the crystals around the vase of fresh flowers—whichever ones connote fun and friendship to you. Then add gifts or other trinkets that remind you of your loved one.

Light the candles, kneel before your newly created shine and say:

    I light the fire of loyalty

    The heat of heart and the flame of love and friendship.

    Brightest blessing, Great Goddess bring,

    The spirit of friendship will surely sing.

    As the fates do dance, I welcome the chance

    To share my love and my life.

    So mote it be.

Oral Fixations

Food can be foreplay, a wonderful prelude to a night of love. I recommend consuming these aphrodisiacs for your pleasure:

  • Almonds, or erotically shaped marzipan
  • Arugula, also called “rocket”
  • Avocado, referred to by the ancient Aztecs as the “testicle tree”
  • Bananas and banana flowers
  • Chocolate, quite rightly called “the food of the gods”
  • Honey, as the term “honeymoon” came from a bee-sweetened drink served to newlyweds
  • Nutmeg, the traditional aphrodisiac for Chinese women; eat enough and you will hallucinate
  • Oysters, prized by the Romans for both their effect and their resemblance to female genitalia
  • Strawberries, often mentioned in erotic literature
  • Coffee, a stimulant for many things
  • Garlic, the heat to light the flame of desire
  • Figs, another symbol of ultimate femininity; just eating one is a turn-on
  • Vanilla, captivating for both its scent and its flavor

Two Come Together as One: Marriage Rites

Nowadays, weddings are a big business and can be huge productions that take no less than a year of planning. Weddings are one of our most beloved rituals, and while they often cost a pretty penny, they are usually deeply meaningful for every person in attendance. My friend, the esteemed author Daphne Rose Kingma, wrote a lovely collection of ceremonies called Weddings from the Heart that run the gamut from traditional to highly alternative. This book is a great resource for engaged couples celebrating the journey of love.

I have had the good fortune to officiate at two weddings and have created a variation of the classic handfasting which I will share with you here. These are two very happy couples, so it seems that this particular variation of this ritual is effective.

Handfasting Ritual

Weddings are usually planned at least a year ahead. If at all possible, choose a day during the new moon phase, as a marriage is a very important new beginning. Create a bower of beautiful, scented flowers and burn lightly scented candles. Traditional flowers recommended for the bower include roses, cherry and apple blossoms, and gardenias. As a gift at one handfasting, I gave the happy couple long-burning Votivo candles, which last for days, in mint-pomegranate scent. On their anniversary, I always give them the same candles so that they can rekindle the moment of their wedding, since smell and memory have powerful ties.

In Western culture, it is customary for the bride to wear a veil and some red and blue in her wedding finery. Giving gifts is also an important part of the conventions of weddings. The bride and groom should wrap small, symbolic presents for each other and set them on the altar, which is placed in the eastern part of the room or space. Altar decorations are simple and symbolic: just two white candles and a willow wand. The wedding rings are affixed to the willow wand. At this handfasting, I also gave the bride and groom symbolic gifts of small rings and ribbons of blue to represent the energies of the air, red incense to be lit from the candles to represent the energies of fire, and a gardenia to represent the earth. Wine, which represents water, should be in a chalice on the altar. Wine for all, along with sweet cakes, should also be ready for the celebration and sharing with the guests and witnesses. Wiccan tradition calls for both a priest and a priestess to perform the handfasting, but in this case, and according to the wishes of the bride and groom, I officiated alone.

Since most of this couple’s family members were Methodist and Catholic, we wanted to make everyone as comfortable as possible with the concept of a highly ritualistic pagan marriage. We created little cards explaining the origin of the handfasting and providing the text and instructions for audience participation. The cards were tied to little bells to be rung at the end of the ritual to signal through sound that the marriage ceremony had been completed. Not only were the wedding guests comfortable with the ritual, they loved it. The bride wore a scarlet wedding dress, a lovely red veil, and a willow wand headdress. The groom wore an elegant tuxedo which set off her fiery gown perfectly.

The text of the handfasting is as follows.

The priest or priestess speaks:

May the place of this marriage be consecrated,

for we gather here in the ritual of love and bliss

with two who would be wedded

(Bride’s name) and (Groom’s name),

please step forward and stand here

before your friends and family

and before the gods and goddesses of the world.

Be with us here, O spirits of the air,

and with your swift fingers, tie the bonds between these two who would be married,

and tie them closely and securely.

Be with us here.

At this point, tie the two symbolic gift rings together with blue ribbon, then loop them over the willow wand and replace it on the altar.

Be with us here, O spirits of fire,

and light their love and passion

with your fiery ardor.

Light the incense from the candles and place it on the altar, then say aloud:

Be with us here, O spirits of the earth

and ground deep the roots of their love.

Pick up the willow wand and tie the gardenia to it. Then say:

Be with us here, O spirits of water,

and let joy flow forever for (Groom’s name) and (Bride’s name),

for as long as they are married.

Blessed goddess and merry god,

give to (Groom’s name) and (Bride’s name),

who stand before us in the light of their love,

your love and protection.

Blessed be!

Here the audience responds:

Blessed be.

Hold the willow wand with the rings and gardenia tied to it out to the bride and groom, instructing them:

Place your right hand over this wand and the rings of this rite of marriage.

Above you are the stars,

below you the stones.

As time passes, think upon this:

Like the eastern star, your love shall remain constant.

Like a rock, your love will stand firm.

Possess one another, but always be understanding.

Have patience at all times,

for stormy times come and go, but they leave upon the wind.

Give each other love as often as possible

of the body, the mind, and the spirit.

Be not afraid and do not let the ways of others dissuade you from

your path.

The gods and goddesses are always with you,

now and forever.

After a short pause, ask the bride:

Is it your wish to become one with this man?

She answers.

Ask the groom:

Is it your wish to become one with this woman?

He responds.

Does anyone here today say nay?

Say to the bride and groom:

Place the rings on each other now.

Before the gods, goddesses, and everyone here as witness,

I now proclaim you husband and wife!

Now the bride and groom kiss. Next, they speak any words they have prepared for each other. Finally, it’s time for them to exchange their symbolic gifts. At the end, say:

Now we ring the bells and it is proclaimed—this ritual is done!

Let Your Love Blossom: Your Magic Garden

A great relationship can be cultivated, literally. By planting and carefully tending flowers that have special properties—like night-blooming jasmine for heightened sensuality, or lilies for lasting commitment—you can nurture your relationship. During a new moon in the Venus-ruled signs of Taurus or Libra, plant an assortment of flowers that will surround you with the beauty and energy of sweet devotion.

Before you place your hothouse posies or seeds into pots or flowerbeds, bless the ground with a prayer of health for your plants, yourself, and your relationships.

Light a black candle to absorb and dispel bad energy and place it in the middle of a circle you have drawn with a stick. Dip your hand into a clay bowl of water and sprinkle drops behind you and before you. Sing out:

    Great spirit, I offer you this petition.

    Please cleanse this land—you are the greatest magician.

    With my hands, I will plant and sow.

    Here, a healing garden will now grow.

    Blessings to you and to the Guardians of the Earth.

Aphrodite's Oil of Love

This oil stimulates desire and prowess in men. For women, follow the same instructions, but instead of the ginseng and yohimbe (which are greatly stimulating to men), substitute pinches of saffron and ground dong quai (also known as angelica root), long honored in the orient as a tonic for females.

In a favorite bottle or jar, ideally red or pink, mix together the following recipe with a silver spoon:

  • Five drops rosemary oil
  • Five drops patchouli oil
  • Ten drops yohimbe extract1
  • A pinch powdered ginseng root
  • Two tablespoons light sesame oil

You can use the oils on your fingers to anoint candles, or even to massage your lover’s body.

Finding the Sacred in Sensuality: Your Erotic Altar

To prepare for new relationships and deepen the expression of feeling and intensity in your love life, create a center from which to renew your romantic spirit. Here you can concentrate your energy, clarify your intentions, and make wishes come true. If you already have an altar, incorporate some special elements, such as red candles or red crystals, or anything associated with Venus, like copper or a seashell, to enhance your sex life. Your altar can sit on a low table, a big box, or any flat surface dedicated to magic. One friend of mine has her sex altar at the head of her bed. Begin by purifying the space with some smoke cleansing. Then cover your altar with a large red silk or silk-like fabric. Place two red candles at the center of your altar, and then place a soul mate crystal—two crystals naturally fused together—at the far-right corner of the altar. These are widely available at metaphysical stores. Anoint your candles with jasmine and neroli oil. Also keep the incense you think is sexiest on your altar. Place fresh Casablanca lilies in a vase, and change them the minute they begin to fade. Lilies are heralded as exotic and erotic flowers, prized for their seductive scent.

FLAME OF PASSION ALTAR DEDICATION

Here at your magical power source, you can “sanctify your love.” Collect your tools as well as meaningful symbols and erotic iconography and prepare for the sacred rituals of love. Light the candles and incense and dab sensual essential oils between your breasts, near your heart. Speak aloud:

    I light the flame of desire;

    I fan the flame of passion.

    Each candle I burn is a wish,

    and I come to you as a witch.

    My lust will never wane.

    I desire, and I will be desired.

    Harm to none, so mote it be.

Relationship Corner

As you walk into your bedroom, the relationship corner will be the back right corner. Your love and sex energy have to be nurtured there, and you might as well consider placing your altar there to serve as your personal erotic wellspring.

Look at this area with a fresh eye—what is cluttering your love corner with dead energy? Half-empty perfume bottles or near- empty cosmetic bottles could be impairing your relationship energy. You must clear unhappiness out of this space, clear the area of any clutter by getting rid of all unnecessary objects and tidying up.

To cleanse the area, ring a hand bell anywhere clutter has accumulated, giving special attention to your bed and pillows. Here are a few tips:

  • Never bring old pillows into a new home. Old pillows can cause poor sleep and bad dreams. They can carry old sexual energy and can kill a relationship.
  • Never place your bed in the center of a room, as this will cause anxiety and get in the way of a healthy sex life.
  • Never have the foot of the bed facing the door, as this brings very bad luck.
  • To keep your lovemaking fresh, always make the bed and change the linens often.

Place these objects in your bedroom to attract loving energy:

  • 2 rose quartz crystals of equivalent size r Pink, orange, or red fabric
  • 2 red candles
  • Images of two butterflies

Rituals of Engagement

Using ritual to create sacred space in your life puts you between the worlds. You are on the threshold where all things are possible. The magic circles is a boundary, separating the sacred and the magical from the mundane. Out of all the rituals marking the passage of life, engagement is unique in that it is a threshold between stages in life. You are no longer single, but you are not quite married, either. As courtship turns into engagement, the relationship has deepened, yet the foundation is not quite solid. You are still in the process of building, exploring, and discovering. Engagement is the marker, the boundary, separating your old life from the new path you will walk with your betrothed.

Rituals of engagement are quite common. Most married people who would never see themselves as any sort of ritualist have performed engagement rituals. Asking for someone’s hand in marriage, accepting the offer, and trading rings are rituals that involve special words and ritualized actions, such as getting down on one knee, that carry life- changing significance.

Unlike marriage, which usually requires an official minister, engagement rituals are private, personal, and often spontaneous. They are simple and heartfelt. They can involve anything your imagination creates. Sometimes the individual who proposes hides a ring in a special place, creating a romantic treasure hunt, or has it as part of the presentation in a romantic dinner. Each ritual can suit the couple’s personality and style.

In a magical context, there are two kind of modern engagement rituals. The first is the question and answer. One person—traditionally the male in heterosexual couples—“pops the question” and presents a ring. The second can be a more magical acceptance of the engagement, where both people are clear, conscious, and purposeful in their magical intent in order to formalize their engagement and walk toward the path of marriage together. This is an approach to getting married through deep discussion and agreement.

The ring is the most important tool in this ritual. Some people get hung up on the size and quality of the ring and its stone, and jewelry companies have come up with creative marketing plans based on your monthly pay to determine the money you should spend on this ring. Obviously, they have their own interests at heart, not yours. To the magically inclined, the price and size of the diamond aren’t as important as the love and magic put into the ritual of choosing and offering it.

Diamond rings are most often used in engagement. The ring is a circle, a wheel, forever turning, an unbroken line. Gold is the metal of the sun and conjures a bright future. Magically, it symbolizes good fortune, success, health, creativity, and immortality. A gold ring is a symbol of a union that will last forever, shining brightly. The sun also rules the diamond. It is a most beloved gem and spiritually is one of the most powerful, for it represents the powers of light and transformation. In a diamond, the blackness of coal has been transformed into purest light and the color spectrum.

To bring out these blessings, consecrate the ring before offering it to your beloved. Wash it in pure water, envisioning all unwanted energies dissolving away. Hold the ring up to the sun and feel the rays of light catalyzing the powers of the gem and the precious metal. Feel it fill with light, and then hold it to your heart. Feel the love you have for your future spouse. Charge the ring with your love, your hopes, dreams, and magical wises. Enchant the ring’s energy to grow as the two of you grow as a couple, increasing your live and blessings. Then put it back into its box, or whatever container you will present it in, and close it. Don’t let anybody else see or touch the ring until you hand it to your love. As you present it, feel the love you have invested in it radiate outward. Let it inspire your heart and mind as you ask, “Will you marry me?"

Aphrodisiacal Altar: Sacred Space for Love

To prepare for new relationships and deepen the expression of feeling and intensity to your lovemaking, create a center from which to renew your erotic spirit. Here you can concentrate your energy, clarify your intentions, and make wishes come true. If you already have an altar, incorporate some special elements, such as red candles or red crystals, or anything associated with Venus, like copper or a seashell to enhance your sex life. Your altar can sit on a low table, a big box, or any flat surface dedicated to magic. One friend of mine has her sex altar at the head or her bed. Begin by purifying the space with a sage smudge stick—a bundle of sage that you burn as your pass it through the space. Then cover your altar with a large red silk or silk-like fabric. Place two red candles at the center of your altar and place a soul mate crystal—two crystals naturally fused together—at the far right corner of the altar. These are available at metaphysical stores. Anoint your candles with jasmine and neroli oil. Also keep the incense you think is sexiest on your altar. Your sex altar is also a place where you can keep sex toys that you want to imbue with magic. Place fresh Casablanca lilies in a vase and change them the minute they begin to fade. Lilies are heralded as exotic and erotic flowers prized for their seductive scent.

Love Altar Dedication

Light candles and incense and dab the jasmine and essential oils above your heart. Speak aloud:

I light the flame,
I fan the flame,
Each candle I burn is a wish.
My lust will never wane.
I desire and I will be desired.
Harm to none, so mote it be.
