Fluorite

Fluorite comes in every color of the rainbow and features a bonus—its fluorescent quality produces a special, rather eerie glow under ultraviolet light. Pure fluorite (simple fluorine and calcium) is colorless. Colored fluorite—in oceanic green, dark purple, buttery yellow, pale amethyst, or bright blue—results from traces of other elements.

Fluorite is dualistic in its opacity—it can by crystal-clear or translucent. Fluorite is rather like glass except it’s brittle and soft, which keeps it out of the running as a precious gemstone, even though it is just as beautiful to look at and polishes to a brilliant, glossy surface. The yielding surface scratches easily, making it an unfortunate choice for a ring. Fluorite is best worn as an earring, close to the brain and neck and spine, areas where it offers enormous assistance and healing. Even as a pin or pendant, it must be handled very gingerly to avoid damage or scratches to the surface.

Fluorite is commonly found in China, Peru, Norway, Australia, Britain, and several areas of North America. The state of Illinois has massive fluorite deposits which formed around 150 million years ago from the fluorinated (by Mother Nature herself!) water that was heated and rose to a high level during the Jurassic period, flowing all around limestone deposits from the earlier Mississippian period of 330 million years ago. The fluorine-rich brine hit the calcium-laden limestone, and the conditions were perfect for crystallization of fluorite. Think about that for a moment. The crystal you hold in your hand may well have formed 100 million years ago. What vast energy must be contained inside!

I find it somewhat amusing that fluorine flowed in ancient river waters naturally, and now we have fluoride (a compound of fluorine) put into the drinking water of today to strengthen teeth and prevent tooth decay. There is a link, however, because fluorite is also beneficial to bones and teeth. The ancients used it to treat growths and cancers. Fluorite sparks the mentality and can bring on deeply meaningful epiphanies. In addition to bring beneficial for arthritis, sports injuries, and skeletal issues, fluorite is a boon to sexuality, said to be Mother Nature’s Viagra! Fluorite creates conditions wherein the gentle release of sexual anxiety and libido problems is possible. On your second honeymoon, take a chunk of fluorite crystal to the hotel—ooh la la! 

Fire Agate

This interesting specimen has small, thin layers that allow light to fill them with what is known as fire. Really, the effect occurs due to the inclusions of very thin layers of iridescent limonite, which cause the light to refract in differing colors. Fire agate is formed when silica-laden water is heated and mixed with iron oxide, filling the cracks between the rocks and then cooling into this interesting stone. Most often found in India, Iceland, Brazil, North America, and the Czech Republic, fire agate needs to be cut in just such a way to feature the layers; one wrong cut and the fire agate is ruined. The process of cutting fire agate is a reversal of Mother Nature’s process.

Fire agate is favored for its iridescent appearance; some believe it is the physical manifestation of the spiritual flame, one of absolute perfection. Fire agate brings the wearer courage and the ability to fend off fear. The fire inside this agate provides a protective shield that actually sends fright back to its source. Fire agate causes a sense of calm and a greater connection to the planet. It is a very useful mind-clearing stone for meditation. Fire agate is wonderfully conductive to introspection, helping to bring deep-seated issues to the surface so they can be examined in the clear light of day. Orange stones are thought to be the most powerful for their high degree of stimulation and for their ability to reveal the hidden.

Scent your wrists, your throat, and your left breast over your heart with the same oil. Jasmine and rose have very powerful love vibrations to attract and charm a lover. Charging Your Jewelry with Magic

Charging a gem or crystal imbues it with your intent. Upon charging your jewelry, you can use it in spell work or anytime you want to surround yourself with the magic you put into the gemstones. While picturing your truest wish and hope, and what you ultimately want to achieve through this process, anoint a candle with an essential oil that most expresses your energy. Perhaps it is rose or, as in my case, amber. Begin by lighting the candle and gazing into the flame. Warming Brew: Apple Brandy Spirits

With an arctic freeze coming, we need to stay warm. This drink will do it!

 

Here is a delightfully easy recipe that will produce a flavorful homemade liqueur that smells as good as it tastes.  If you are interested in making a hassle-free bottle of spirits apples are a wonderful way to start.  Start with these ingredients:

4 Apples, sweet ones, not sour

2 cups Brandy

2 cups Vodka

1 quart clean and sterilized Mason jar

 First, clean, core and slice your apples Place the slices in a Mason canning jar. Pour in the alcohol to cover, using equal parts brandy and vodka. Put the jar in a cool dark place in your pantry. Allow the infusion process to happen for month or until it is to your tastes. The combination of sweet apples and brandy gave a luscious fruit-forward flavor, with no need for sugar.  After infusing, strain the apple slices out using a strainer to filter the liqueur. Pour the spirits into a pretty and sealable bottle and enjoy at your next pagan party.

Bonus tip: apples can really be used with any spirit so let your imagination run wild!

Yuletide Soul Tribe Ritual

How are you celebrating the holiday of Yule with your soul tribe? 

Here is an excellent way to closen the bonds of your circle and kindle sparks of positive change at the coming new year. In a safe place outdoors, build a bonfire and create an altar to the east of it. Place a small cauldron with a candle in it on the altar, and surround it with mistletoe, ivy, and holly. Participants should also wear crowns woven from these evergreens. If it is too cold or snowy where you live, you can gather indoors and form a semicircle around the fireplace, or around the altar.

Begin the ritual by holding hands around the fire. Hum softly, gradually building the hum to a shout. This shout represents the cries of the Goddess giving birth once again to the sun, and to the new year. The ritual leader says:

All bow to the East! Hail to the newborn Sun, and to the Great Goddess who has brought him forth!

Everyone bows to honor the Sun God and the Mother Goddess. The ritual leader chants:

Brigid,

Diana,

Morgan,

Cerridwen,

Heaven’s Queen,

By the light of this moon

In this dark night,

Teach us the mystery of rebirth.

The ritual leader lights the candle in the cauldron while everyone else remains perfectly still. Now is the time when the Goddess will reveal herself privately to each participant. If you are outdoors, listen and look carefully for a sign. Traditional omens are a sudden wind, shooting stars, the screeching of an owl, and the appearance of a deer. Even if you are indoors by the fire, the Goddess will still make herself known in your heart. When the time feels right, the ritual leader says:

Queen of the Stars,

Queen of the Moon,

Queen of the Earth,

Bringer of Fire,

The Great Mother gives birth to this new year

And we are her witnesses.

Everyone shouts:

Blessed be!

Pass the lit cauldron to each participant so they can speak a blessing for the new year and the new sun. Place the cauldron with the candle back on the altar. The ritual leader closes the ritual with this final expression of gratitude to the Goddess:

Thank you for the sun that gives us life

Without beginning and without end

Everlasting in Eternity.

This ritual is now done!

A toast to the new sun should take place with hot cider or mead, and warm festive foods.

Fiery Crystals: Soul Stones for Sagittarians

Tourmaline—specifically the multihued specimen known as melonstone, which is pinkish red with a blue-green stripe—is the precious soul stone for the Jupiter-ruled Sagittarians.

Longevity Elixir: Pear Bliss Brew

One of the most gorgeous of fruits, pears have long been prized in Asia for being a lucky fruit that also offers a long and prosperous life.

 The great magical teacher from whom I learned so much, Scott Cunningham, advocated for their use in love magic and seduction spells. Scott was brilliant in all matters so do take his advice! This pear liqueur is a special brew, indeed. You will need this to make this longevity potion:

3 large ripe pears

2 pods of cardamom

Lemon peel, two inches long

Vodka, 1 quart

1 quart clean and sterilized Mason jar with lid (preferably dark colored glass)

Start by crushing the cardamom pods and set aside. Peel the 3 pears and cut into thin slices. Gently place the pears into the jar. Put the crushed cardamom and lemon peel on top of the pears. Cover all with the vodka. Close and jar and tighten the lid, then gently shake twice. Store the jar full of pears in a dark, cool cupboard for ten days. After the ten days, remove the jar from cupboard. Pour the contents of the jar into a mixing bowl and mash thoroughly using the back of a fork. Strain the mixture into another bowl, using a colander that has been lined with a coffee filter or cheesecloth. Repeat this process twice and then pour the pear liqueur into the Mason jar. If you are feeling fancy, you can store in a pretty bottle but make sure it is sterilized and seal tightly. Live long and prosper!

Rose Quartz is Pure Love in Mineral Form

We all get worn down now and again and, when that happens, we often feel blue or, at least in the doldrums a bit. If you have not other crystal, make sure to have rose quartz on hand.

It infuses you with self-love and brightens “the vibe” anywhere it is. I view self-love is a superpower and the real foundation of all true personal power. Widely known as the stone of unconditional love, the soft pink hunk of love known as rose quartz is said to attract and inspire love in all forms. It’s especially good for promoting self-love and emotional harmony.

It can be a teeny tiny pebble of pink or a big ol rock but you should have it near you, especially when you are feeling low. I say have some around at all time but, then again, I have crystals in every room. Keeping a piece of Rose Quartz out where we can see it, on your desk at work,   on your bedside table or next to the bathtub, can act as a powerful visual reminder to take a little bit of time for yourself.

Power Crystals & Soul Stones for Early Libras

Libra, First Half: September 22-October 6

A soul stone that was extremely popular in days of old is spinel, a jewel available in a multitude of hues, including black, dark green, orange, white, blue, purple, and red. Spinels were symbols and stones of the royals; the Queen of England owns a grand specimen called the Timur ruby, and the czars of Russia wore a crown decorated with a magnificent spinel. Spinels are rarer than either rubies or sapphires, and I predict they will have a renaissance. The extremely rare precious green spinel is the type most highly prized among Libras, and it can bring out their aesthetic values and empower their pursuit of the arts.

Dioptase is the power stone for first-half Libras. A deeper green than any emerald, it has an extensive copper content. Venus is associated with the color green, and the intensity of this gorgeous green stone makes it a love crystal for Venus-ruled Libras, enriching both their personal relationships and their higher love for humankind. Dioptase can also awaken the spiritual side of Libras, making the usually attractive members of this sign even more beautiful inside and out. Dioptase is difficult to cut for jewelry because of its brittleness. Use uncut crystal clusters as lovely spirit enhancers all around the home.

Kyanite is the sky-colored heart stone for early Libras. Because it shares the same chemistry (but different crystal structure) as a couple of other minerals, kyanite is known as a stone of symmetry, perfect for providing balance. The Greeks favored this aluminum-based rock and called it disthene, meaning “dual strength,” because it is soft (and easily cut) lengthwise but much harder across. Kyanite most commonly occurs in long, bluish green crystal blades but also comes in cluttered rosettes with a pearly, opalescent surface. If you’re a Libra, an air sign, keep kyanite around to stay steady and strong and help avoid spreading yourself too thin and succumbing to petty, energy-draining distractions.

Astral Azurite Meditation

The great psychic and healer Edgar Cayce used this blue beauty for achieving remarkable meditative states during which he had astoundingly accurate visions and prophetic dreams.

 Indeed, azurite helps achieve a high state of mental clarity and powers of concentration. If you can’t find the answer to a problem in the here and now, try looking for solutions on the astral plane. Write the problem down on paper and place it under a small azurite overnight on a windowsill so it collects moonlight.

At 11:11 a.m., lie comfortably in a quiet and darkened room with the azurite stone placed over your third eye on your forehead. Clear your mind of everything for eleven minutes and meditate. Essential Oil Remedies: Sacred Self Care

Essential oils have been used medicinally for centuries.  They are extracted from flowers, grasses, shrubs, herbs, and trees.

If you are skeptical about the efficacy of essential oils, you’ll at least find it reassuring to know that the oils enter and exit the human body without leaving any toxins behind.  The best ways to use essential oils are externally, absorbed through the skin, or through steam inhalation.  However, oral applications are indicated for some remedies.

There are hundreds of essential oils used by herbalists, but for general therapeutic use in the home, these are my recommendations you need to have at the ready,

Lavender Oil

If I could only have one essential oil, I would choose lavender because it is so versatile.  It is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, sedative, antidepressant, topical treatment for scalds and burns, and a good detoxifier; it prevents scarring and promotes healing, and its lovely scent has a calming effect and is widely used in aromatherapy.

Tea Tree Oil

Used by aborigines in Australia for centuries, tea tree oil is a powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic.  It has a fresh camphor smell and is used to treat athlete’s foot, sunburn, candida, and other infections.

Peppermint Oil

A wonderful therapeutic for digestive, respiratory, and circulatory complaints, peppermint oil is used to treat indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, flatulence, halitosis, catarrh, varicose veins, headaches, skin irritations, and rheumatism.  It also works as a deterrent for infestations of mice, fleas, and ants.  It is not surprising that peppermint oil is regarded as the world’s oldest medicine.

Eucalyptus Oil

In eucalyptus oil, we have an all-purpose antiviral, antibiotic, diuretic analgesic, and antiseptic.  It can be therapeutic for coughs, colds, respiratory stimulation, and insect bites.  If you start to feel cold symptoms, use 5 drops of eucalyptus oil in a hot bath or in a bowl prepared with boiling water for a head steam.

Thyme Oil

Thyme is an “old-time” antiviral, antibiotic, antiseptic, and diuretic curative; it was highly valued and widely used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans for fatigue, coughs, warts, rheumatism, neuralgia, and acne.  Thyme oil works very well mixed with base oil for massage.

Rosemary Oil

Sweet-smelling rosemary oil is a great antiseptic to use for flu, coughs, headaches, depression, muscular stress, arthritis, rheumatism, fatigue, and forgetfulness.  Rosemary oil is stimulating and will perk you up if you do a head steam with it or put a couple of drops in the bath.

Crystal Feng Shui for Peace of Mind

If you were to come into my home, you would see a lot of gorgeous geodes, crystals, fossils and a few plain old rocks I found on my walks and loved the look of them. 

Recently, I asked my boyfriend, “Is it normal that all I want to buy are rocks and crystals?” He assured me I was fine and he likes the beauty of nature. Stones placed in considered spots around your home can help bring about the change you wish to see in your home.  Using what I call “crystal feng shui,” you can place a stone or a geode in the appropriate position of your home to facilitate specific results. For example, rose quarts will promote healing and release any negative energy that is clinging. I have many chunks of amethyst which brings me a sense of peace, Clusters of chrysolite or citrine will set in motion both prosperity, calm and creativity.

If you want to bring more money into your home or office, place a big chunk of pyrite, the very gold and sparkly stone commonly known as “Fool’s gold”  on the left side of your desk, and the abundance will begin to flow in.  If you have a bad energy spot that feels spooky or an area in your home or office in which the vibrations feels very static or low, place turquoise stones there for grounding or an obsidian ball to soak up this negative energy. Be sure to take the obsidian outside and cleanse it in salt every so often to rid the negativity from your home. If you want to have your bedroom be a place of sheer happiness, twin pink jades or rose quartz will create this sweetly loving ambiance. Select stones you are attracted to using your own intuition; you will often find that you have picked the exact crystal you need. Crystal feng shui will doubtless bring you much comfort and serenity you can enjoy for years to come.

Mindfulness Massage Bars: Healing Relaxation Rub

Nothing is more relaxing than a massage and it is so good for you- healng and energizing, to be sure.

Massage bars should be look, smell and feel lush and soothing to the skin. Cocoa butter is beloved for the delicious chocolate sweet scent. I also recommend shea butter, grapeseed oil or mango butter  as other options for they are also delightfully sumptuous.

·        1 teaspoon of essential oils such as lavender, clary sage, neroli, bergamot, amber

·        soap bar molds (available at all craft stores)

Slowly heat the  beeswax, almond oil and cocoa butter in a double boiler over low heat until just melted. Remove from heat. Add the essential oil when mixture has cooled slightly. Pour into soap molds and cool until hardened, approximately 2 hours. Place in freezer for a few minutes before popping bars out of molds. To use, rub massage bar onto the skin — the warmth of the skin immediately melts the bar. Package your handmade massage oil in a pretty box or basket and give it as a thoughtful gift.
